FLY FISHING GEAR
EVERYTHING YOU NEED FOR GUIDED FLOAT AND WADE TRIPS IN NH
The first thing you need for a guided fly fishing trip is a New Hampshire Fish and Game Fishing License. Depending on how long your stay will be you can purchase single day, multi-day or full season licenses on Fish and Game’s website. Click here to purchase. You must bring a PDF or printed version of your license on the day of your trip.
The White Mountain region is notorious for its variable weather, so I always recommend being prepared for any weather possibilities. I want to make sure you have a safe and enjoyable day on the water.
I will provide the proper rods, reels and flies for every trip. If you need waders or boots, they can be rented through North Country Angler. Please see below for additional gear that all clients should bring:
Long pants. During the spring and fall, I recommend warm pants for all of our fishing trips. Whether wading or floating, they’re important for keeping you warm so that you can fish for trout all day long! The summer months in New Hampshire are hot, so I recommend a light synthetic pant which will protect you from the sun and wind.
Layers. You should always have an extra fleece and long sleeve regardless of the season, sometimes more. Even mid-summer, a brief rainstorm is all it takes to change the temperature dramatically.
Sunglasses. These are crucial for protecting your eyes from the elements. Not only that, but a good pair of sunglasses is key for reading water, sighting fish, seeing your fly, and watching the bottom if you’re wading.
Hat. Whether a beanie or baseball cap, having a good hat is important for both protections from the elements and bugs. Our springs and falls can be chilly in the White Mountains, so a warm hat for those times of year will be most comfortable.
Socks. For wading warm, tall, breathable socks should be worn at all times.
Buff. This is an essential item for protecting against sun, wind and bugs throughout the entire season. As temperatures cool, it’s also great for staying warm and comfortable.
Rain jacket. Afternoon showers are frequent in the summer, so raincoats are a must-have. Even if it doesn’t rain, they’re the perfect layer when cool evening air rolls in.
Warm jacket. In addition to the long-sleeve layers mentioned above, you should have a warm jacket. Mornings and evenings on the river can be quite cold, and you never want to have a shortage of warm clothes.
Snacks. I will have pre-packaged snacks available, but I recommend bringing some of your favorites.
Water. It’s crucial to drink fluids every 20 minutes while on the river. Make sure you bring several water bottles to stay hydrated!
Bug repellent. New Hampshire and the White Mountain region are famous for their black flies and mosquitos. I will have bug spray available, but if you prefer your own, I recommend you bring it.
Sunscreen. The summer sun is strong—even on a cloudy day. Make sure to apply sunscreen before you arrive but bring the bottle along in case you need to reapply.
Personal medication. If there are any medications you need for personal safety on the water, make sure you bring them.
